Popular teen orientated vocalist Dion third and final US top twenty album success came with Ruby Baby. Alas, it demonstrates the weaknesses of many pop album releases during this period. It mixes the No. 2 smash hit title track with some very dubious MOR standards. The orthodoxy of the time was that being a teen pop idol was likely to be a very ephemeral occupation. Thus there was thought to be a need to quickly establish a singer's 'all round entertainer' credentials through more 'mature' album tracks. In reality this approach rarely satisfied either the teen or the more adult markets. (US:20)

"The title track was his first, and one of his best and gutsiest, hit singles, yet oddly little else on the record was as forceful or even too similar."

"There are unnecessary covers of contemporary hits, and vaguely jazzy/pop standard-ish numbers that indicated there were hopes to cross Dion over into Bobby Darin territory."

"Ruby Baby, his first Columbia album, was little different from the typical LP of a talented teen idol of the time with its unsatisfactory mix of approaches, apparently aimed at helping establish the singer's all round entertainer credentials."

"He opened his account with Columbia with the stunning Ruby Baby, and I expected the album to be more of the same. What a disappointment I got."

"Apart from three tracks, which are Ruby Baby, Gonna Make it Alone and Will Love Ever Come My Way, the rest of this album is either filler, or wimpy rubbish."
