Something New – THE BEATLES***

I’ll Cry Instead/Things We Said Today/Anytime At All/When I Get Home/Slow Down/Matchbox/Tell Me Why/And I Love Her/I’m Happy Just To Dance With You/If I Fell/Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand

The Beatles third Capitol album from 1964 contains nine tracks from the UK A Hard Days Night album, two from the UK EP Long Tall Sally and a German version of I Want To Hold Your Hand. A mixed bag indeed, which caused exasperation among British fans on what the Americans were allowed to get away with. (US:2)

"The two songs from the Long Tall Sally EP are both covers. Slow Down is played in typical early Beatles style, beginning with a long instrumental intro before John gets going with the vocals - harmless rock 'n' roll, that's all. Matchbox is more fun purely because Ringo sings it. Typical rock 'n' roll structures derived from the blues, nothing to fall out of your chair over."

"This isn't the worst of the Capitol albums, remarkably, but it still pales next to the albums that were being released in the UK all the same."

"John Lennon remains the dominant force as their musical sophistication continues to grow. He injects an effervescent vocal on the remake of Larry Williams' direct blues Slow Down. Ringo finds his voice in his rockabilly interpretation of the Carl Perkins classic Matchbox. The musical complexities of John's If I Fell and Paul's Things We Said Today could put a scare into Burt Bacharach."

"The three greatest attention grabbers are all John. I'll Cry Instead exposes his inner struggles for the first time with another complex but accessible melody. And on his two most undeniably catchy tunes, Anytime At All and Tell Me Why, he displays his compassion and paranoia respectively."
