American Tour – THE DAVE CLARK FIVE***

Because/Who Does He Think He Is/Move On/Whenever You’re Around/I Want You Still/Long Ago/Come On Over/Blue Monday/Sometimes/Anytime You Want Love/I Cried Over You/Ol’ Sol

The Dave Clark Five's third US LP release in 1964, American Tour includes the US No. 3 hit single Because. Despite the title this is not a live recording. It was more favourably received than the group's other releases of original material. (US:11)

"American Tour still remains, for many old fans, the favourite of all DC5 records. It's hard to seriously argue with that statement, considering that out of the twelve songs on here, there isn't a single complete duffer."

"This time around, the songs are all written by band members. Fortunately, they drop most of the extra sap and concentrate on what they do best - catchy rhythmic teenybopper ballads and slightly more engaging catchy rhythmic pop-rockers. After all, that's what the British Invasion was all about."

"The Dave Clark Five were at their best at the outset of their career, and quickly went super nova. This third album injects a mild punk element to their typical Tottenham sound variation of the British Invasion."

"Incrementally superior to Return!/A Session With, but that's no great shakes."

"As is the case with every Dave Clark Five record, the first song is the best song on the album, Because is a beautiful facsimile of the early Beatles pop sound, and as it would turn out, the best song The Dave Clark Five would create."

"Other than Because, the tracks here are, for the most part, competent but not inspired. The major problem is the lyrics, which tend towards hackneyed love themes, trite rhymes and awkward wording. The chord progressions also tend to be pretty predictable."

"Most Dave Clark albums struggle to reach the average category. They are basically a hit song or two surrounded by a conglomeration of whatever songs were handy at the time."
