My Generation – THE WHO****

My Generation was mod rockers The Who's first LP. The classic title track reached No. 2 in the singles chart. An interesting debut let down by the R & B covers and the tedious The Ox. It would be two years before The Who's albums matched the quality of their singles. (UK:5)

"At a time when most bands were still in the habit of releasing a few good songs as singles and padding their albums with filler, The Who did something unusual in releasing an album of predominantly good work, with most of it written by themselves."

"Well, we've got classics with My Generation and The Kids Are Alright, both plugging into a particular section of a nations youth and their frustrations. Legal Matter is another high quality Townshend song, although it wouldn't be until 1967 when we'd get an album full of Townshend compositions from beginning to end. Still, for the time being, the My Generation album was a more than impressive debut signalling the arrival of a major new talent."

"I'm at a loss to think of another 1965/66 debut album that matches the sheer sonic power of this one. This is how they came out of the gates. This collection is a must have for any Who fan."

"Obviously the title track and The Kids Are Alright are rock n roll classics but some of the other tracks are well worth checking out. I love Good's Gone with its sour lyric and droning sounds underpinned by Keith's pounding drums. A Legal Matter is a country influenced gem."

"The Kids Are Alright is a sophisticated pop number, with chiming guitars, three-part harmonies, and a lilting vocal melody, though still retaining the driving rhythm of other Who songs of the period."

"One thing I have never managed to 'get' about the album are the two James Brown covers, though. Not only are they awful, they simply do not fit in with the rest."
