Try It was the final album from the Los Angeles garage rock group The Standells. It presents some diversity of style including blue eyed soul and a little psychedelia.
“This was The Standells last album. It is arguably their best, despite it's schizoid nature. The tracks were taken from various recording sessions, and there isn't a consistent sound throughout the album. While most of the tracks feature the classic Standells garage punk sound, there are a handful of tracks that attempt to re-invent the band as a 'blue eyed soul' group, with mixed results. Surprisingly, the album actually holds together pretty well. There are some of The Standells best recordings here, including Can't Help But Love You, Try It, Barracuda, All Fall Down and Riot On Sunset Strip.”
“On Try It, their soul-based efforts don't seem that bad today, especially surrounded as they are by some pretty good psychedelic punk material. It might not have been what the group was about, or even what they were terribly good at, but you've probably heard lots worse from bands out of this period, and they sound like they're really trying.”
“Due to a couple of really strong cuts, this one rates the best of their five albums. But it is rather inconsistent, and totally devoid of the garage flavoured sound that has come to be known as their trademark. This is mostly just semi-commercial rock, with at least a couple of tracks very commercial.”
“Very solid rock album which really shouldn't be classified as strictly garage as The Standells used some methods utilized by current pop and psychedelic artists of the period. Can't Help But Love You is a great example featuring prominent horns. Ninety Nine & A Half is a more bluesy number, but shows the cohesiveness of the band. The next two tracks are solid, but the title track and Barracuda are fantastic tracks. Did You Ever Have That Feeling follows and is a great change of pace, with some very odd sounding guitar work. The closing track Riot On The Sunset Strip is a great closing track. A fine album with good songwriting and musicianship.”
