Virtuoso guitarist Jimi Hendrix quickly released his second LP Axis: Bold As Love which contains many of his best remembered tracks. He is backed up by Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. (US:3 UK:5)

"Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Hendrix stretched further musically than the first album, but even more so as a songwriter. He was still quite capable of coming up with spacey rockers like You Got Me Floating, Up From The Skies and Little Miss Lover. But the beautiful, wistful ballads Little Wing, Castles Made Of Sand, One Rainy Wish and the title track, show remarkable growth and depth as a tunesmith."

"This album is so good that if I had never heard music before and heard this for the first time, I would instantly fall in love. There's a reason why Jimi is known as the best guitarist ever. Take one listen to Little Wing and you'll see how technical even a love song can be. Great album."

"Axis: Bold As Love was indeed a bold departure from the hit machine that was Are You Experienced. Even though it was released in the same year, it marks a dramatic lyrical evolution from Hendrix's first album. This is evident in the stream-of-conscious, almost free-form, versing in such brilliant compositions as Castles Made Of Sand, Bold As Love and the albums best song Little Wing."

"It features some typically freewheeling guitar excursions, with hypnotic feedback explosions crashing into beautifully twisted melodies, with elements of funk, blues, and jazz melding with delirious psychedelic melodies."

"Axis shows what a beautiful songwriter Hendrix was and how his guitar playing could be quiet and beautiful as well as loud and powerful. It also shows what an innovator Hendrix was in the studio. In some ways, it's his most experimental work and the first half of is really just amazing, and as strong as anything he ever did."
