Hawaii – SOUNDTRACK****

Main Title/Prologue/Hawaii/Pastoral Letter/Abner & Jerusha/Malama’s Death/Hawaiian Welcome/Quiet Harbour/ Sailors & Women/Keoki’s Tragedy/Abner-The Wishing Doll/Promise Kept

The romantic epic film Hawaii starred Julie Andrews and Richard Harris. The stirring music for the soundtrack was composed and arranged by Elmer Bernstein. (US:88)

“Every track is a masterpiece unique unto itself. Pounding, rhythmic drums and horns send the heart racing one moment and a second later soothing melodies and warm breezes will lull you to sleep. No words can relate how amazing this soundtrack is.”

“This Elmer Bernstein composition is truly an overlooked masterpiece. The film itself was a big, sweeping multi-generational story of early Hawaii and this score perfectly captured the majesty, adventure, drama and tragedy of the story. The main title theme is as hauntingly beautiful as any you will ever hear, but every track on the album immediately carries you away to a distant exotic land.”

“The best track on the album, if one can be pinpointed (no mean feat), is the stunning overture, a splendid display of unique instrumentation combined with lush and sweeping themes that reappear throughout the score, which ranks as one of the best in movie (or in music) history.”

“This soundtrack is one of the most haunting, melodramatic, pieces of the 20th Century. Having seen the motion picture in 1966, I know, Mr. Bernstein created one of the world's best soundtracks of its time.”

“Bernstein's vast musical panorama for Hawaii, displays a near ecstatic degree of energy and enthusiasm. It's a jubilant and rapturous work which makes frequent visits to Bernstein's well of melodic invention. The score is, without question, one of the composer's most, magnificent opuses.”
