One of Britain’s best known female vocalists from the sixties, Marianne Faithfull is remembered for her carefree melodic pop singles. North Country Maid, an album of folk songs, shows another side of her talents.

North Country Maid sees Marianne tackle over a dozen folk standards. The atmosphere is very pastoral, medieval and ancient while her interpretations are often remarkable, for example the eerie mystery of Lullaby is absolutely spellbinding. Even Scarborough Fair gets a fine rendition as it passes through her tremulous lips.”

“Marianne Faithfull started her long career as a mellow folk singer with a rather alto voice which is very expressive and sensitive. The repertoire here is a mixture of British traditional music and original songs often created by other folk singers. One of the most underrated albums deserving a larger audience.”

“I have no problems affirming that this is her most beautiful album. This kind of music was missing from a singer mostly known as pop artist. But she also experimented with folk songs. And I think that was her real home.”

“Though it features none of the beautiful orchestral excesses that adorn her more famous pop works, the near-perfect song selection of mostly ancient folk material with its modern, imaginative and minimal backing, combine to reveal a unique, intense vocal talent of compelling fragile beauty.”

"This album is one of the best of the 1960s folk movement. This is one of the most poignant and depressed records I have ever heard. It gains strength in its tragic quality from Marianne's beautiful and pristine soprano that seems to try relentlessly to push off the gloom that surrounds her, but it never quite outruns its grasp. The album is coherent and beautifully sad throughout. This record is the sound of happiness melting down the walls of an empty white room."

“If you want to hear a great early album of Marianne's start here with North Country Maid. A very acoustic folky, sound to it. Marianne's voice is absolutely beautiful. Very sweet, soft and feminine.”
