A number of 'garage' bands appeared on the US national music scene in the mid sixties featuring a raw and energetic driving guitar sound. One such group was The Shadows of Knight whose debut album Gloria featured the title track US top ten single. (US:46)
"The Shadows of Knight were a hard-rockin' bunch of teenagers who played rock 'n' roll with a heavy blues influence."
"The Shadows of Knight are the most blues oriented garage band I've heard so far. Unfortunately, they don't pull it off that well. The band sounds like a weaker version of Paul Revere & The Raiders. Maybe I'm just missing something, Gloria is definitely a raunchy album, but not too raunchy. It seems controlled."
"This isn't exactly bad. It's definitely raw and a bit unhinged, especially for the time it was recorded in. Ultimately, the songwriting isn't that strong, and their choice of covers, though good, is fairly predictable."
"If you don't like this, you probably don't like rock 'n' roll or simply rock music. The boys are playing so wildly, in such a crazy way with a huge energy. There are some originals and some upbeat blues standards like the John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom. Their Chuck Berry's Let It Rock cover is even more furious than the original."
"It is the best rock and early white rock blues you will ever hear, anywhere. The vocals, and guitar work are second to none. Additionally, great controlled distortion, reverb and sustain with the clearest sounding Mid-West 60s lead guitar riffs you'll ever find."
"The album consists mostly of covers, but don't worry, they really manage to make these songs their own."
