Tobacco Road – THE NASHVILLE TEENS***

Tobacco Road was the US only album release from British R & B group The Nashville Teens. The title track reached No. 6 in the UK and No. 14 in the US with Google Eye a UK No. 10 hit. Future releases would be much less successful.

"The Nashville Teens were a truly stomping rock & roll band from London. Their main claim to fame was providing the kamikaze backup behind Jerry Lee Lewis on his Live At The Star Club LP and recording the massive hit Tobacco Road."

"Musically they were easily the equals of contemporaries such as The Animals and Manfred Mann, but despite the massive success of their version of John D Loudermilk's Tobacco Road they never seemed to excite the star-making machine in the same way. They are now remembered almost entirely for that one hit. Their showcase album Tobacco Road demonstrated their forceful sound and versatility."

"The Nashville Teens were one of those bands that should have made it to the top but, puzzlingly, didn't. They hit their stride with the classic R & B-folk crossover Tobacco Road, but failed to grab the public's attention to this extent again. A shame, because this LP demonstrates that the Teens could be a top-notch and exciting act."

"Yes, The Nashville Teens are an overlooked band. I know many versions of Tobacco Road but the Nashville's one beat them all. Mona, Bread & Butter Man and a few more are the other fast rock gems here. Anyway, some weak forgettable songs are also here like the too much covered and worn La Bamba. Besides rock music, The Nashville Teens played some good blues covers like Hoochie Coochie Man and Parchman Farm. But their best songs are the fast and wild rock ones."

"The Nashville Teens are so much more than those guys who recorded the hit single Tobacco Road. So not only is this a great album on its own with great direct rock 'n' roll and blues. The hit single Tobacco Road is of course a good swinging experience. Twelve tracks on this debut album and all of them have got it."

"Their original hits Tobacco Road and Google Eye are both here, with many other favourites."
