Easy listening Irish vocalist Val Doonican's debut album Lucky 13 Shades was to be the first of his many hit albums during the sixties, sales boosted by his TV show. He epitomised the generation gap since his relaxed, avuncular style appealed to grown ups, but was disregarded by teenagers. (UK:2)

"Ballads were his stock-in-trade but he was not limited to them as he sometimes recorded uptempo or mid-tempo songs. In the main, he recorded easy listening pop music or covers of soul, country and folk songs adapted to a relaxed style, but he also recorded some Irish songs too."

"Val’s music was a mainstay of BBC radio’s Family Favourites and his must-see television show ran for 24 years, a combination of chat, music and other stars’ guest appearances."

"His own show on BBC television, lasted for over twenty years. It featured his relaxed crooner style performance, sitting in a rocking chair. As well as a number of comic Irish songs, notably Paddy McGinty's Goat and Delaney's Donkey."

"Although Val had many novelty songs - usually based on his own brand of Irish humour - such as Delaney's Donkey, it was his gentle ballads that usually gained greatest chart success. These numbers became a staple part of his TV show which in turn became an accepted part of British life just as much as the Morecambe & Wise Show."
