The Best Of – CILLA BLACK*****

Love Of The Loved/Anyone Who Had A Heart/You’re My World/You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’/Loves Just A Broken Heart/Alfie/I Only Live To Love You/What Good Am I/Step Inside Love/Where Is Tomorrow/Sing A Rainbow/Its For You/Yesterday/Goin’ Out Of My Head

Before hosting naff TV shows Cilla Black was the most consistently successful female British singer of the sixties. This first compilation LP is uniformly good but still omits several fine hits. (UK:21)

"I am one of those people who cannot understand why Cilla has squandered her talent appearing on Blind Date for nearly 20 years, with the result that she is not generally remembered for her considerable and excellent singing talent which brought her such critical success in the 60s and 70s."

"Because Cilla became such a familiar and successful face on mainstream TV entertainment during the late 70s onwards, people have forgotten where she came from originally. A singer who had a powerful but distinctive voice, Cilla made some great recordings that stamped the feel of the charts at the time. Although limited in her vocal abilities, unlike the supremely gifted Dusty, she made the most of what she had and nailed some absolute classics. When I listen to tracks such as Anyone, My World and Alfie, they are heartbreakingly poignant songs. The performances are so sincere; they just rip your heart apart."

"Cilla Black had a fabulous voice in the 1960s and all the modern squeaky singers of today just can't hold a candle to her. She was discovered by Brian Epstein at the Cavern Club in Liverpool at the same time as The Beatles. Paul McCartney wrote a few songs for her. George Martin, The Beatles musical director, nurtured her singing talent and her voice was spectacular."

"This LP will be a welcome addition to any collector of 60s music as well as introducing a new audience to the power and range of our Cilla. There is so much dross put out by artists who have never come within spitting distance of Cilla's recording success, and yet she is all too often overlooked."

"With a powerful voice full of tone and colour, coupled with material from the best songwriters and producers she delivered single after single of top quality ballads. Unfortunately, some of Cilla's finest sixties singles have been omitted and a couple of album tracks were included instead."
