Strictly Personal was the second album from the eccentric Captain Beefheart. It comprised a mix of experimental music, blues-rock, psychedelia and idiosyncratic vocals.
“For me, it captures the essence of that time, with its mind-blown style, where every track tells a story, albeit a confusing one. The first three tracks are particularly compelling, in which rambling vocals and ragged guitar trade off each other.”
“He tried a more 'personal' take on the blues here, and moved the rhythms out towards a more jazz-influenced polyrhythmic wildness. The songs and the lyrics are idiosyncratic and somewhat flawed. They're just not coherent enough for my liking, and the music's a bit uneven - it has great stuff in there, but alternates into more straight, ostensibly commercially viable sections that drag things down a bit.”
“Once again a very crazy album by Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band. Strictly Personal isn't as amazing as Beefheart's debut but this one surely rocks very well too. Even if I think the album loses some of its power towards the end.”
“Wedged in between the highly enjoyable and infectious pop grooves of Safe As Milk and the sprawling and free-wheeling experimentalism of Trout Mask Replica, Strictly Personal, the Captain's second album has unfortunately garnered a reputation as a fairly substandard release. I would agree that it is a fairly forgettable, but on its own the record is an interesting slice of acid blues with a tinge of the experimentalism that characterised later albums.”
"Strictly Personal is a noisy mix of the blues, avant garde and psychedelia showing the Magic Band setting sail on their voyage for the distinct, freeform choppy waters of Trout Mask Replica.”
“While Beefheart is a critic's darling mainly because of his odder, more surreal side, his hard rocking bluesman side is just as great, and you can really hear it shine through here. The material on this album is fabulous. However it was produced in such a way that it would sound more psychedelic to boost sales.”
