Sighs of relief all round as we reach the final Beatles US 'butcher' album Yesterday & Today. The group must have felt the same way as the original notorious album cover, featuring the Fab Four in butcher's aprons, with lumps of meat and dismembered baby dolls, was quickly withdrawn from circulation. "A small fraction of the original covers were shipped to disc jockeys and reviewers as advance copies. Reaction was immediate, as Capitol received complaints from some dealers. The record was immediately recalled under orders from Capitol parent company EMI's chairman."
"I won't even try to track down the points-of-origin of the eleven tracks included on this version of Yesterday & Today but I can say that this was a wonderful piece of vinyl for the average American Beatles fanatic. Some of their most recognizable songs such as Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, Yesterday, We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper were tossed into the mix alongside lesser known but equally potent tracks."
"Any album that has And Your Bird Can Sing, If I Needed Someone, and the title track on it does not need to apologize for living. The Brits had to buy three whole LPs to get those songs."
"Yesterday & Today is the tenth Capitol issued Beatles album. Early pressings of this cobbled-together set are of interest for three tracks (Dr. Robert, And Your Bird Can Sing and I'm Only Sleeping) that Capitol re-channelled into 'Duophonic' sound. This heavy-handed fake stereo process adds severe compression and echo to monaural recordings - the overall effect is that of a wind tunnel. These three tampered with songs are only available on this particular LP."
"Baby butchering Beatles really shocked the masses when this hit the stands in 1966. It was a joke for The Beatles but the industry did not see the funny side of it."
