Sugar ‘N’ Spice – PEGGY LEE****

Ain’t That Love/The Best Is Yet To Come/I Believe In You/Embrasse Moi/See See Rider/Teach Me Tonight/When The Sun Comes Out/Tell The World About You/I Don’t Wanna Leave You Now/The Sweetest Sounds/I’ve Got The World On A String/Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)

Peggy Lee demonstrates her superlative vocal talents on Sugar ‘N’ Spice a collection of songs from a variety of different genres from ballads to more uptempo material. (US:40)

Sugar 'N' Spice is among the best of her work for Capitol Records, the contents are pure and fine Peggy Lee at her best. Where some of Peggy's albums in the 1960s included much forgettable contemporary material that hasn't stood the test of time too well, this album features a program of songs that range from contemporary show tunes (I Believe In You and The Sweetest Sounds), an excursion into the blues (See See Rider) and the great American song book (When The Sun Comes Out and I've Got The World On A String), plus a few lesser known numbers for good measure.”

“Peggy is in fine voice and brings her sweet feminine tones to the ballads and her salty, seductive sounds to the more uptempo material. The backings are by Benny Carter and feature a compact orchestra with an emphasis on brass. Of interest here, too, is Peggy's solo treatment of the novelty Big Bad Bill which is a comic highlight. All in all, this is a fine album that should delight Peggy fans as well as those who admire this legend to a lesser degree.”

Sugar 'N' Spice is an excellent example of Peggy Lee's beautiful artistry. She sounds great on this album, singing some pretty incredible songs beyond perfection which leaves no doubt about her exceptional vocal talents.”

“In the 60s she slurred a little less than she would subsequently, and made brilliant swinging recordings like this one. She has such a sly, sensual delivery. The arrangements are so sharp and don't suffer from the bombast that ruins so many recordings from this period.”

Sugar 'N'' Spice has no obvious theme except love, but the overall feel of the album is bright and cheery. The well-known songs here include The Best Is Yet To Come and I've Got The World On A String. To my ears, the outstanding ballad here is When The Sun Comes Out.”
