The musical film Gypsy starred Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden and was a faithful reproduction of the Broadway stage show. In the film some of Rosalind Russell's singing was dubbed. Music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondeim. (US:10)
"The 1962 Mervyn LeRoy film version of Gypsy has always been the most criminally underrated movie musical, despite the facts of its utter fidelity to the original Broadway show. The Styne/Sondheim score is nicely performed by the brassy Warner orchestra, and just the performance of You Gotta Have A Gimmick alone is worth the price of the LP."
"The 1962 Gypsy is the best, and its soundtrack is the finest recording of the show, hands-down. The orchestrations are rich and full-bodied, unlike the tinny sound on the recordings of the various stage productions."
"This film adaptation is a total joy. If anyone wants to hear someone yelling the part of Rose, get the Merman and LuPone cast albums."
"As usual with Sondheim creations (for this one he 'only' wrote the lyrics), it takes some time before you fully appreciate it. At first I was disappointed but now it like it." "The glorious Styne/Sondheim score is left virtually intact and well-played by the Warner Bros. Orchestra under the spirited direction of Frank Perkins. Natalie Wood gets to sing all her songs. She has such a beautiful voice."
“The LP was issued shortly after the movie was released and stayed in print for the next ten years, but Merman's original cast recording always outsold it and still does. Listening to these soundtrack recordings devoid of the visuals you will not have a real good time."
