The Fortunes – THE FORTUNES***

You’ve Got Your Troubles/Looking Through The Eyes Of Love/Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance)/This Empty Place/I’m Still Alone/If We Lived On Top Of A Mountain/You Can Have Her/Maria/Laughing Fit To Cry/ Coloured Lights/All Cried Out/Voice Your Choice/Time To Be Going/Here It Comes Again

Eponymous debut album from the Birmingham harmony group The Fortunes. They had a major international hit with the tuneful You’ve Got Your Troubles and enjoyed a revival of fortune in the early seventies.

“Take any track from this collection and it has 'cabaret' stamped all over it, but in The Fortunes case, that's no bad thing. With dense harmonies, dramatic drum fills and big band backing, this music appeals to anyone who loves a good tune well done without worrying about whether it is really rock and roll. Only a handful of these songs were hits, but all are good quality productions. A few tracks are versions of songs better known elsewhere, but are decent attempts."

“The mid-sixties, in both the UK and USA, was a time of great change especially musically. While most groups then were heading in one direction, mainly R & B, a refreshing alternative came from the suburbs of Birmingham in the shape of The Fortunes. Lead singer Rod Allen was allied to some wonderful harmonies, merged with some fine orchestral and string productions. This combination should have given the group more success than they eventually achieved.”

“Featuring an array of symphonic ballads, happy fun sounds, magnificent harmonies, and Rod Allen - one of that rare breed of being both a great bass player and vocalist.”

“Just about every song is listenable and that says something as sometimes you get the hits but you also get the misses, but not here.” “The Fortunes were one of the truly great vocal groups of the mid 60s who, although they didn't achieve top success, were in their own way a unique sound.”

“The Fortunes first came to prominence and international acclaim in 1965, when You've Got Your Troubles broke into the American and British top tens. Following in the wake of Merseybeat, and the R & B of The Rolling Stones, The Fortunes added another dimension to the sound of pop, with their sophisticated orchestration, dual lead vocals and well worked counter-melodies.”
