Country Willie His Own Songs was the RCA debut LP from country star Willie Nelson comprising mainly songs he wrote but which other artists made famous. Willy Nelson would have to wait until the mid 1970s before he achieved his commercial breakthrough.

“One of Willie's earliest albums consists mostly of songs he wrote that other people made famous. Though he penned these tunes, this set is actually mostly re-recordings done for this album. Still, this sounds really very good, so keep an eye out for it if you like Willie.”

“Willie Nelson's 1965 RCA debut is simple but not raw, elegant but not fragile, sophisticated but not pretentious. The twelve originals within - many of which had already been taken up the charts by other artists - are testament to his uncanny ability as a songwriter to blend refreshing innocence and hard-earned wisdom. His distinctive phrasing was taking shape, and the pared-down, tasteful arrangements focus attention squarely upon his vocals."

“This beautifully produced album from 1965 is the best stopping place to learn about Willie. He made a masterpiece years ahead of it's time. Buy it, recordings like these are why Willie's musical reputation is where it is today.”

“Fragile and beautiful - no honky-tonk stuff. Not quite what Willie's style became but maybe a little in the Jim Reeves style in there. An understated but skilful guitar and voice, but so low, gentle and easy. It is simple in its make-up but so well composed that the simplicity adds the dimension to the great writing and eloquent playing. This is just great and full of feeling. Please give this soothing smooth record a chance, I think anybody could appreciate this, country or not.”

“Willie Nelson's first recording for RCA could be considered a greatest hits compilation from the Texas native singer-songwriter. You can hear in these songs that Willie was ahead of his time, with signature Nelson songs like Night Life and Funny How Time Slips Away. No other songwriter at the time had written songs such as these. Many early Nelson recordings contained a touch of blues and jazz.”
