The Sensitive Sound Of – DIONNE WARWICK****

Unchained Melody/Who Can I Turn To/How Many Days Of Sadness/Is There Another Way To Love You/Where Can I Go Without You/You Can Have Him/Wives & Lovers/Don’t Say I Didn’t Tell You So/Only The Strong Only The Brave/Forever My Love/That’s Not The Answer

Dionne Warwick's Sensitive Sound album contains seven new Burt Bacharach songs. Unfortunately, lacking a major hit single, these were not enough to prevent it stalling at a very disappointing placing on the US album chart. (US:107)

"None of the songs featured on the album made any momentous contribution to the charts or on the airwaves. This is no reflection of the material, as it uniformly remained on par with the high calibre of her earlier outings. Once again a majority of the originals come from the Bacharach/David songbook, with a few well-chosen covers of pop standards."

"This mid-1960s release from one of the decade's most distinctive voices was produced by the composer Burt Bacharach, and contains many of his signature complex arrangements, which Warwick negotiates with characteristic ease. Highlights include Only The Strong Only The Brave, whose subtle production brings the singer's voice to the fore, and the sophisticated Where Can I Go Without You."

"Although this album did not contain any hits, it reveals a number of gems. It is a unique cross between easy-listening and jazz, but the vocals of Dionne Warwick, the lyrics of Hal David, and the compositions of Burt Bacharach, makes it all worthwhile. Dionne's voice is in prime condition. Although she's revered as a pop or easy-listening vocalist, she can sing virtually anything, Naturally, she incorporates some soul into all the songs."

"Unchained Melody is one of the greatest songs ever made, and Dionne validates that sentiment. Her voice meshes well with the melody and the execution is perfection."

"There are dozens of spine-chilling moments for all who appreciate good songwriting and arrangements: and the absolute stand-out track Don't Say I Didn't Tell You So with almost as many time signature changes as Promises Promises, and Dionne's restrained scat vocal doubling a muted trumpet solo."
