Final album from the US psychedelic band Country Joe & The Fish. Their music epitomised late Sixties hippiedom but by the time of this release they had lost many original members. (US:111)
“The opening Sing Sing Sing is a bit poppy, but it catches some of that hippie vibe. The real treat begins with the haunting beauty of She's A Bird with some of most original reverb guitar playing I've ever heard and great vocals by Joe. I like all songs, even the funnier tracks like the country styled Hang On. Side two is on a par and the band even explores some heavier rock.”
“C.J. Fish is the final studio album by the acid rock group Country Joe & The Fish and is a way more balanced one than their previous effort. This is psychedelic rock with some country rock elements, and you won't find that many weak songs here.”
“On this one, they have regained much of their lost form, and the album has the unusual quality of being better overall than the sum of its tracks. Side one is a mix of somewhat mainstream rock, and some ballads. But side two really breaks out with some solid underground rock with psych influences, featuring great guitar work.”
“This is not as distinctive as their early stuff, but I still like it. It's more consistent and more professional sounding. The adventurous, exploratory weirdness of their first couple of albums has been discarded, but the spirit of the more accessible material has been retained. I would say this is more along the lines of a late period Byrds.”
“C. J. Fish starts off strong with Sing Sing Sing and then moves into some wonderful melodic songs. Side two tails off into two longer jams that meander into nowhere, missing the creativity of their first two albums.”
“By the time of C. J. Fish most of the band had gone but they still manage to rekindle their original, quite unique sound, intermingled with some enjoyable rock & roll and folk numbers. If you're looking to repeat the experience of their psychedelic masterpieces then there are a couple more here.”
