Quicksilver Messenger Service – QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE****

Pride Of Man/Light Your Window/Dino’s Song/Gold & Silver/Its Been Too Long/The Fool

Self titled debut album from psychedelic rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service who were stalwarts of the San Franciscan music scene in the late sixties. (US:63)

"Consistently very good, this album presents quality San Francisco semi-hard rock with psych influences, and just a hint of country flavour. They were one of the icons of the west coast scene, a must for collectors of the genre."

"Fantastic album of tightly arranged psych pop and extended composition. John Cippolina's guitar playing is stunning, and the dense epic album closer The Fool is a masterpiece of composition noteworthy for the innovative use of guitar effects. Some of the poppier songs are a little twee."

"Quicksilver Messenger Service remain a considerably overlooked band amongst the 'underground' rock scene of the late 1960s. They did achieve consistent, though unspectacular, commercial success in the United States, but not overseas. Amongst the psychedelic or 'jam' rock bands of the time they were second only to The Allman Brothers in the ability to produce powerful guitar-based epics."

"Just a terrific album. Too short really, but every tune makes the most out of every minute. Lyrical, deep, energetic and not pretentious. Cippolina's trademark trebly vibrato playing is perfect, great vocals, and a tight easy rhythm section show a really great San Francisco band."

"In a day when studio tricks have washed out the human qualities of most rock bands, this album sounds like there are real human beings, playing in concert, right here. The very elements that make it dated make it desirable from a music lover's point of view. Not everyone will like it as it represents values that have now gone out of fashion, but for those who appreciate solid playing and honest artistry in their rock music, this is an album to be treasured."

"It is quite brief, but when you have songs like Pride Of Man and the unbelievable instrumental Gold & Silver you don't need length. Definitely check this one out."
