Eponymous debut album from the Chicago psychedelic rock group H. P. Lovecraft. Comprises several band originals plus a few covers to mixed reviews.
“The debut LP by H.P. Lovecraft is certainly a nice package full of psychedelic rock. With such fantastic standouts like The White Ship and The Time Machine this album will please the ears of the psych fans. On the other hand there are some not so memorable songs too. Definitely a good record, but if you think about some of the other amazing albums released that year, this one really can't be called essential.”
“This is the band's debut album and it includes mostly garage-styled psychedelic rock with hints of prog rock and some clear influences from folk. If you like psychedelic rock, be sure to check this out.”
“One of the psychedelic era's most interesting outfits, Chicago's H.P. Lovecraft had all the talent to become one of the genre's true legends. Their music is definitely different, often intriguingly so, but also manages to utilize many of the more traditional psychedelic trappings. Though their brand of rock is certainly not folk, this influence on their songwriting cannot be ignored.”
“A kind of standard from the psychedelic era: an eclectic jumble of instrumentation performing hypnotic, half-jammy tunes steeped in space-indicative reverb. Sonically, this is nothing you haven't heard before from bands with more fame and recognition. The songs, though, have a certain appeal to them. While not lauded on a global scale, there's a measure of intrigue here that is worth listening to.”
“This debut LP showcased an impressive mixture of originals and well chosen cover tunes. H.P. Lovecraft found the band taking folk-rock structures and adding a series of psychedelic touches - stabbing organs, woodwinds, feedback guitar, to great vocals, strong melodies, killer harmonies. The results were nothing short of inspired.”
“Some pretty good moody psych rock, but it is a little obvious and generic at times. There is better than this out there, but it serves as an interesting side note.”
