Arizona was the debut album from Mark Lindsay, lead singer of the late 1960s US pop group Paul Revere & The Raiders. His first solo effort veered more towards the easy listening market. (US:36)
“Title track Arizona is a wonderful AM single. There are a couple of other good songs, but most of this record is banal MOR schmaltz. Stick to the single.”
“Though this is pure 70s pop and sounds dated by today's standards, it's a smooth and lovely LP. Perhaps music of this era needs another twenty years to go by to be fully appreciated, when singers like Mark will be thought of as vintage rather than dated.”
“This very gifted and talented man wrote and sang about things we all felt. He had the gift of belting out smoky-voiced rock and roll, or almost whispering a lullaby, always with such wonderful emotion.”
“Unfortunately many wrote Mark Lindsay off as simply a teen idol, but he is one of the most talented men in rock history - a great composer, arranger and producer and also possessing one of the most versatile voices of the rock era.”
“The majority of the album comprises soft, sentimental songs with depressing lyrics about heartbreak and lovers leaving, that left me feeling very down.”
“This album shows that he picked the wrong material for his solo career. He is best at soulfully belting out a tune, but most of this material is slow tempo easy listening. I expected more passion from Mark, but you won't find it here, for the most part.”
“On his solo albums Mark headed in a middle of the road/easy listening direction, something that I never really understood. I always thought he should have gone in the singer-songwriter/rock direction. This stuff is softer, but you can't mistake the voice featured in Raider classics.”
