Country star Glen Campbell enjoyed another huge album success with Galveston, again fronted by a Jimmy Webb classic. The title track was a US No. 4, and UK No. 14, hit single. (US:2)
"The Webb penned numbers are the winners on Galveston, though there are other easy listening highlights amongst the general faux-country mawkishness."
"This album gets a bad rap. It is the result of a cross between country-style music and pop songwriting. For the majority of the album, this combination does not bode well for Campbell, but even so, more often than not, his many talents - singing, playing guitar, and an admirable ability for finding covers that suit him, make their way to the surface."
"Most are familiar with the title track, yet Take My Hand For A While and Where's The Playground Susie are every bit as melodic. If This Is Love is an unusual track that really cooks in a restrained sort of way. And Oh What A Woman is so un-PC by today's standards it borders on being either funny or embarrassing - depending on your point of view - but is so catchy you'll be singing along despite yourself."
"Two Jimmy Webb classics for the price of one here in Galveston and Where's The Playground Susie - and recorded by the only man in the world who can sing what is in Jimmy Webb's heart."
"This is another good album for any true music lover who really appreciates good singing voices. This man had a wonderful range and a beautiful voice."
"For those of us raised on country music, at a time when other great and memorable genres were sweeping the world, and giving hugely stiff competition, this album has so many unforgettable and poignant country tunes. Glen Campbell did great music like this all the time."
"If they just kept the bad songs off and included more goodies this could be the very best Glen Campbell album, but in the 60s there wasn't too much weight given to making consistent albums in the field where Glen was active."
